A New Chapter Under the Sakura
Our family was so excited to reach this big milestone: Parker’s entrance ceremony for preschool. In Japan, the Sakura (cherry blossoms) signify the start of a beautiful new stage in life. Because schools start in April, the blooming flowers are the traditional way to celebrate a student’s first day.
The Challenge of the Midday Sun
We chose a local park near our home for this session. It was harsh midday light, and since we were on a steep hill, using a tripod was too risky—we didn't want our camera to fall! Because no one else was around to help, my wife and I simply swapped places to make sure everyone got a photo with our son.
Working with Toddlers: Speed is Key
If you are photographing kids, especially toddlers, you have to be fast! Parker was ready to take off his uniform almost as soon as we started. In family photography, you often only have a small "window" of time before a child loses interest, so we made sure to capture his energy and smiles quickly.
Finding Beauty Everywhere
The beauty of Japan in spring is that you don't always need a famous tourist spot. There are amazing locations everywhere—even in a small park or near a hotel by your house. If you look around with a creative eye, you will find a perfect spot for your own family memories.
